Sabbath Habits - Social Media Detox Day

Slow your scroll…

And look at your time on your phone...go seriously, look at that screen time option on your phone and where you spend the majority of your time.

With all the “screen time” you invest in, what would happen to your relationships if you changed the “screen time” to “screenless time”?

How would your relationships look if you took a moment and put your phone on silent and put it completely out of sight and out of mind?

As I have been writing this out, I have picked up my phone more times than I care to admit and literally just tossed it onto my bed so that it wouldn’t be able to be a habit to just pick it up.

I know that if my phone is next to my laptop as I write, that anytime my hand isn’t typing it will go to my phone. I wish I had more self control, but at this moment I don’t. So you know what I did? I removed the temptation by changing its location.

I knew the temptation was greater, so I just removed it. This is not a new concept, but I think many of us do it for a bit, but then get back into the routine of spending time on social media.

*Caveat: my job is social media and I really love it and use it to create connection where I can, but let’s be honest, I am not “creating connection” when I mindlessly scroll through to see photos and just glimpse a look at captions.

I am implementing a social media detox day every week, where I don’t get on any form of social media for a whole day.

However, if you want to take it from a “good habit” to a “Sabbath Habit” I would encourage you to take the next steps.

Social Media Detox Day Sabbath Habit

What we see and let into our heads and hearts not only matters to God, but it genuinely affects how we see things and process things in our lives.

  1. Decide. Decide which day you are going to take off social media and make a conscious choice to actually do it.

  2. Take that day off from social media, don’t get on Insta, FB, Twitter, Tik Tok, What’sApp, and all the other ones you know you need a day off from.

  3. Want to take it a step farther, don’t just take a social media detox, but put your phone away, like in a drawer or have a friend/spouse hide it and set a timeframe for when you can get it back.

  4. Pray and ask God to speak to you while you are less distracted and to give you the desire to hear His voice louder than social media everyday

  5. Write down the emotions you did experience on the day you did NOT look at your phone.

  6. Write down the emotions you did NOT experience because you were off of your phone.

  7. Sit down and reflect on how the day went? Were there positives and negatives?

  8. If you learned something, journal about it or share it with a friend!

  9. Repeat :)
